Men’s Tennis to Compete in Two-Day Rice Invitational
CORPUS CHRISTI – The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi men's tennis team returns to action on Friday, March 21, when they travel to Houston to compete in the two-day 56th Annual Rice Invitational presented by the Wyndham Houston-Medical Center. The Islanders will first take on Rice on Friday before facing Tulane on Saturday in non-conference play. Both matches are set for 12 p.m. at the Jake Hess Tennis Stadium.
The Islanders have had a two-week break from play since hosting the 48th Annual H-E-B Tournament of Champions. A&M - Corpus Christi comes into the weekend with an 11-6 record and a 1-0 record in Southland play. Reigning Southland Conference Player of the Year, Peter Nagy, has been impressive in his junior campaign so far this season, compiling an 11-2 record in No. 1 singles. Also highlighting the team in singles play is sophomore Ricardo Mayagoitia (8-4) in the No. 2 spot and sophomore Javier Pujol, who holds a 9-6 singles record. The sophomore is a on three-match winning streak, including two at No. 4 singles and one in the No. 5 slot.
Rice enters Friday's dual match on a three-match winning streak and an overall record of 5-9 after picking up wins against UT Arlington, Prairie View A&M, San Diego State, Lamar and Texas-Pan American. The last time the Islanders and Owls met up was last season on March 17 at the Rice Galleria Team Invite in Houston. A&M - Corpus Christi was ranked No. 53 in the ITA national rankings and lost a hard fought 4-1 loss to the Owls.
No. 67-ranked Tulane holds an 11-4 record and a 0-1 record in Conference USA. The Green Wave have won six of its last eight matches, including a 4-2 win against South Alabama in their last match. The duo of Dominik Koepfer and Jao Chi-Shan are ranked No. 37 in the ITA doubles rankings after recording a 13-3 overall record, including a 10-2 mark in No. 1 doubles. Tulane won the 48th Annual H-E-B Tournament of Champions title on March 1 after defeating South Alabama 4-1. The last time the Islanders and Tulane met up was on March 20, 2010. The Islanders topped the Green Wave 4-1 in the Rice Invitational. After dropping the doubles point, the Islanders bounced back to win four straight singles matches to clinch the match.
Following Saturday's match, the Islanders will next be in action on Wednesday, March 26, when they take on TCU in Fort Worth, Texas.
