Women’s Tennis Downs PVAM, Men Win Sixth Straight

PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas – The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi men's and women's tennis teams earned matching 5-0 victories over Prairie View A&M today at the Prairie View A&M Tennis Courts. The men's team is off to its best start in program history since 2007 with a 7-3 record while the women's team improves to 2-1.

"I thought both teams showed a lot of focus today," Director of Tennis Steve Moore said. "It was cold and windy, and they made good choices to move their feet extra and to stay extremely focused.

"I'm very impressed with our freshmen, Kerry Galhos and Judit Vives. They are competing very hard and are really learning our system. I'm impressed with how quickly they are learning. I thought our captains did a great job of leading today. Stefania Nicolae and Matt Westmoreland played a very focused match today, as didSandra Burges and Peter Nagy. We are getting very good leadership by example with our captains. We're excited to get back to work and get a little better each day."

The women's team (2-1) jumped out to a 1-0 lead after sweeping all three doubles courts over the Panthers (0-5). The tandem of Maider Martin and Celia Rodriguez started things off with a dominating 6-0 win over Erika Bond and Payton Gore in No. 3 doubles. The senior-freshman duo of Burges and Vives followed with a 6-2 victory over Christine Ngo Gwodog and Sydney Thomas in the No. 2 spot to clinch the doubles point for the Islanders. The duo of Nicolae and Galhos also earned a doubles victory in the No. 1 slot with a 6-2 win over Brittany Harrell and Taylor LeFridge.

The Islanders carried over their momentum into singles play with four consecutive wins to seal the match. Rodriguez powered her way to a straight-set victory over Thomas, 6-1, 6-1, in No. 4 singles to stay undefeated in singles play this season. Nicolae followed suit with a 6-2 first-set victory over Harrell in the No. 1 spot, and followed with a 6-1 second-set win to pad the Islanders' lead to 3-0. Burges didn't waste any time tacking on the Islanders' fourth point of the day with a dominating 6-0, 6-1 victory over Ngo Gwodog in the No. 3 position.

A&M - Corpus Christi captured the match in the No. 2 slot after Martin grabbed a tight three-setter in the No. 2 slot. The sophomore bested LeFridge in the first set 6-1 before dropping a 6-0 second set. Martin then held off LeFridge in the third with an 11-9 victory to give the Islanders' their second victory of the season. Galhos won her first set 6-1 in the No. 5 position over Bond and Vives was ahead 4-0 in the first set against Maria Lackey in the No. 6 slot when the match was clinched. Both Galhos and Vives are undefeated in singles play this season.

The men's team (7-3) propelled their way to their sixth consecutive victory with a 5-0 win over the Panthers (0-5). A&M - Corpus Christi opened with a 1-0 lead after garnering the doubles point. Westmoreland and freshman Paul Cook remain undefeated in doubles action after teaming up for a 6-1 victory over Bruno Snyder and Rasaki Gbadamosi in No. 2 doubles. Nagy and Guillaume Rauseo followed suit with a 6-3 win in the No. 1 spot over Jackson Varney and Daniel Vasquez to earn the Islanders the doubles point.

Nagy kept things rolling with his sixth straight win in No. 1 singles. The junior topped Varney 6-1, 6-0 to improve to 7-1 in the No. 1 spot. Westmoreland tacked on another Islanders' point after he defeated Vasquez 6-0, 6-3 in the No. 3 slot. Kuehnen earned his first collegiate win in the No. 4 spot to post the Islanders' fourth point of the day. The freshman picked up a 6-2, 6-2 straight-set victory over Gbadamosi. Rauseo then capped the match with his first win in No. 2 singles. The sophomore won the first set 6-3 over Snyder before taking the second set 6-2. Cook defeated Aldaz in the first set 6-3 in the No. 5 spot and Jordao was leading McIntyre 2-0 in the first on court six when the match was clinched.

The women's team will return home to face UTPA on Monday, Feb. 10 at 3 p.m. at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center. The men's team will next be in action on Sunday, Feb. 16 in Dallas, Texas, against conference foe Oral Roberts.
