CORPUS CHRISTI – Texas A&M - Corpus Christi junior Peter Nagy was named the Southland Conference Men's Tennis Player of the Week, the league announced today. Nagy had an outstanding week, clinching three straight singles match to improve to 6-1 on the year. The accolade marks his fourth career-weekly honor.
"Peter has worked very hard and has improved a lot in many areas," Director of Tennis Steve Moore said. "He is a highly-motivated guy. Obviously he has improved his game, but I am also very proud of him as a co-captain this year. He has really matured as a leader and most importantly as a student."
Nagy, who returned to the Islanders' lineup this spring, posted three consecutive wins this week in the No. 1 singles position, including two big wins on the road. He extended his winning streak to five matches and helped the Islanders to three sweeping victories.
The Budapest, Hungary native started the week by clinching the match over New Mexico State in Las Cruces, N.M. He posted a 6-5 (2), 6-4 victory over the Aggies' Marc Westgate to lead the Islanders to a 4-0 victory. Nagy followed his performance with a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Dennis Baumgartner of Utah State in Las Cruces to earn the Islanders their third point of the match. The Islanders went on to win 4-0.
The junior finished the week with a 6-1, 7-6 (8) victory over UMBC's Justin Carter in the home opener in front of 127 fans to help the Islanders to their sixth victory of the season.
The accolade marks the second consecutive week the Islanders have claimed the weekly honor. Last week, sophomore Guillaume Rauseo earned the honor.
Nagy, the reigning Southland Conference Player of the Year, and the rest of the Islanders men's team will return to action on Feb. 4 at Prairie View A&M.
