CORPUS CHRISTI – Texas A&M - Corpus Christi sophomore Guillaume Rauseo was named the Southland Conference Men's Tennis Player of the Week, the league announced today. Rauseo garnered his second career weekly honor after an impressive opening weekend at the Lobo Winter Kickoff in Albuquerque, N.M.
"We are all incredibly proud of Guillaume's performance this weekend," Director of Tennis Steve Moore said. "I'm equally impressed with how much he has improved since last spring. He showed incredible courage and mental toughness this weekend. In the biggest moments this weekend when we needed him, he was tough as nails.
"One thing that won't show up in the statistics that I'm most proud of as his coach is that he was an incredible teammate this weekend and really lit a fire under the guys."
Rauseo recorded a 4-2 singles record, including a 4-1 mark in the No. 3 spot. He helped the Islanders to their first victory of the season over Arizona with a 7-6 (6), 6-4 victory on Friday. The native of France then picked up a singles win against UC Irvine on Saturday before finishing the weekend with some remarkable tennis.
The sophomore showed courage and resilience in leading the Islanders to back-to-back clinching victories over UC Irvine and Arizona on Sunday. In the first match against UC Irvine, Rauseo carried his team into the doubles tiebreaker with a three-set win in the No. 3 slot. In the first set, Rauseo grabbed the tiebreaker 7-6 (2) before falling 6-7 (7) in the second set. In the third, it was all Rauseo with the 6-1 victory. The Islanders went on to win the doubles point to clinch the match.
In the final match of the weekend against Arizona, Rauseo sealed a 7-6 (5) first set win before losing an unbelievable 19-17 tiebreaker. In the third, Rauseo came back to win 6-4 and clinch the match for the Islanders with the whole match riding on him. A&M - Corpus Christi improved to 3-3 on the season with the win.
Not only has Rauseo been an outstanding player for the Islanders, but his work in the classroom is equally as impressive. In the fall, he achieved a 4.0 GPA during the semester while majoring in health science.
Rauseo and the rest of the men's team will remain on the road to face New Mexico State and Utah State in Las Cruces, N.M. on Jan. 23 and Jan. 24, respectively.
