Islanders Drop 4-0 Loss to No. 72 New Mexico

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi No. 67-ranked men's tennis team fell short, 4-0, to No. 72 New Mexico tonight in the Ned and Tina Jacobs Lobo Tennis Winter Kickoff at the Linda Estes Tennis Center. The Islanders move to 1-1 on the season after topping Arizona 4-2 this morning.

"Give a lot of credit to New Mexico tonight," Director of Tennis Steve Moore said. "They played an excellent match and they are extremely tough at home indoors. I thought they played a very tough focused match tonight. We competed hard, but tonight was our chance to do some learning.

"There are some adjustments that we need to make tomorrow, but overall I thought we had a good day. We did a good job of controlling the things we could control and competed very hard. We are excited at the chance to get better and compete hard again tomorrow."

The Lobos (2-0) downed UC Irvine in their opening match, 4-1, and came out in similar fashion against the Islanders to pick up wins on courts three and five to take an early 2-0 lead.

James Hignett secured a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Guillaume Rauseo in the No. 3 spot before Hayden Sabatka padded the Lobos lead to 2-0 with a straight-set victory over Matt Westmoreland, 6-3, 6-0, in the No. 5 slot. Mitchell McDaniels followed suit with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Pietro Jordao on court six to tack on another point for New Mexico. The Lobos clinched the match on court four after Mads Hegelund defeated Javier Pujol, 6-2, 6-3.

No. 45-ranked Samir Iftikhar captured a 6-3 first set victory over Peter Nagy and was leading 3-2 in the second set when the match was clinched. Ricardo Mayagoitia was trailing Rodolfo Jauregui in the No. 2 spot, 6-2, 5-4.

The Islanders were without the Islanders Open champion, Kevin Bettendroffer, who will remain in Corpus Christi this weekend to finish a winter semester class.

A&M - Corpus Christi will continue play tomorrow in a rematch with the Lobos at 12:30 p.m. MST before taking on UC Irvine at 4 p.m. MST. The Anteaters dropped both of their matches today to the Lobos and Wildcats. The Islanders will conclude play on Sunday against UC Irvine at 9 a.m. MST and will wrap the kickoff against the Wildcats at 4 p.m. MST.

The Ned and Tina Jacobs Lobo Tennis Winter Kickoff features the new shortened college format where singles is played first and the match stops when the team reaches four points. In the case of a 3-3 tie, the winner will be determined by who takes the best two of three 10-point tiebreakers in doubles play.
