Top Performance #3: Nagy Leads Men's Tennis to HEB Tournament of Champions Title
Peter Nagy made Islanders history on May 1 when he was selected as one of 64 participants in the singles portion of the NCAA Championships. But it was Nagy's consistent performance and strong work ethic throughout the season that helped him reach the historic accomplishment. One of those performances ranks as the No. 3 performance from the 2012-13 school year.
The Budapest, Hungary native went 3-0 including two wins against ranked opponents in singles action to help the Islanders men's tennis team to their first ever HEB Tournament of Champions title. In the opener of the 47th annual event, Nagy made quick work of No. 47-ranked singles player Patrick Kawka, winning 6-1, 6-2, as part of the Islanders 4-1 win over No. 30 BYU. He then picked up a 6-1, 6-3 final at No. 1 singles against Jake Wynan of Louisiana - Lafayette to send the team to the finals of the tournament. In the title match, Nagy earned a 6-2, 7-5 final over No. 92 Ben Davis of Middle Tennessee to lead the Islanders to the crown.
Nagy had an impressive sophomore season for the Islanders. He completed his spring with an overall 16-4 record. He finished with a perfect 5-0 record in Southland Conference matches at the No. 1 singles position, never losing a set throughout league play. In the fall, he lost just one match, winning the Marco & Co. Islanders Open and the Rice Galleria Fall Invite, both ITA-sanctioned events, while reaching the Round of 16 at the ITA tournament.
The sophomore was an automatic qualifier for the NCAA singles portion of the NCAA Championships from the Southland after winning the conference championship at No. 1 singles and being ranked in the top 125 singles players in the nation. Nagy was named the Southland Player of the Year in addition to being a First Team All-Southland selection for both singles and doubles.
