Steve Moore Named ITA Coach of the Year For Texas Region
CORPUS CHRISTI – Texas A&M – Corpus Christi Director of Tennis Steve Moore was recognized nationally on Wednesday, with the coach being named the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Coach of the Year for the Texas Region by his peers.
There are 12 regions in NCAA Tennis, and each of the 12 Regional Coach of the Year winners will now enter a pool to be chosen for National Coach of the Year honors. Moore earned the honor from the Texas Region, which is comprised of every NCAA Division I coach in the state of Texas. The state of Texas is the only state that also comprises its own region.
In a vote taken by other coaches throughout the state of Texas, Moore was an overwhelming choice for the honor. His men's tennis team won the Southland Conference Championship for the sixth straight season, he was named the league Coach of the Year for the seventh straight time and his team won the HEB Tournament of Champions for the first time in school history. He did all of this with three freshmen and a sophomore in the top six of singles play.
"My vote for Intercollegiate Tennis Association Coach of Year for Texas Region is Steve Moore," said Texas Tech head coach Tim Siegel, "Coach Moore saw his Islanders reach #51 in the ITA National Rankings, and his team went to the NCAA Championships as a #3 seed."
While being named the Coach of the Year for the men's side, Moore was also noted for his leadership of both the men and women's programs at the University. He led both teams to the Top 10 in attendance of the ITA national rankings.
"He saw his men and women's teams reach the ITA Top 60 National Rankings, which is an amazing accomplishment for a small Division I school," said Siegel. "In addition to that, he led his team to the HEB Tournament of Champions title, perhaps the most prestigious tourney in the country, while defeating two Top 35 teams. He was the Southland Conference Coach of the Year for the seventh straight time and had both teams in the Top 10 nationally for home attendance, all while coaching two teams to successful seasons."
Moore was also selected for prestigious leadership positions as the Intercollegiate Tennis Association regional chairman for Texas and the NCAA National Tennis Committee in the past year. Moore has been the driving force behind the raising of significant funds for the Texas A&M – Corpus Christi tennis teams.
He is currently at the NCAA Championships in Urbana, Ill., and will coach sophomore Peter Nagy in the singles competition later this month. It will mark the first time an individual from the Islanders will play in the event after he earned an automatic bid to the tournament after winning the individual title and Player of the Year honor from the Southland Conference, and was ranked #88 in the latest ITA national singles rankings.
