Islanders Clinch Sixth Straight Southland Title With Win Over Lamar

CORPUS CHRISTI – The nationally ranked Texas A&M – Corpus Christi Men's Tennis team, ranked No. 58 among all teams nationally in the NCAA Division I rankings, clinched the program's sixth straight Southland Conference Championship on Thursday afternoon, taking a a 6-0 final over Lamar.

Attorney Steve McMains generously sponsored the match for the Islanders (14-7, 4-0 Southland) against the Cardinals (4-16, 2-3 Southland) at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center.

"We're very grateful to attorney Steve McMains for his generosity," said Director of Tennis Steve Moore. "Steve has been a great friend for a long time, and is a tremendous advocate for tennis in Corpus Christi. We're very grateful for his support."

With the team now 4-0 in Southland Conference matches, they are 34-2 since Moore returned to The Island as Director of Tennis, including undefeated conference schedules in 2008, 2009 and 2011. The Islanders will go for their fourth undefeated Southland slate in six seasons against Texas – Pan American this coming Saturday on Senior Day.

The teams also dealt with a rain delay, with weather pushing back the start time to 3:30 p.m. from the original scheduled time of 2 p.m.

Doubles were not necessary due to the Southland Conference Tournament seeding being set, so the two teams started singles play first, with doubles only being played if necessary.

They were not, however, as the Islanders played well on all courts and won all five matches played in two sets. The No. 6 singles match was defaulted to Pietro Jordao to put the team up 1-0 before the first serve.

"This was a very focused effort today," said Moore. "I thought the guys did a good job of the things they could control during the rain delay and made a good statement with their energy in the beginning. There are a lot of things we need to get better at in a short period of time before the conference tournament, so this is a very focused and motivated group right now with a lot of work to do."

Singles scoring started when Matt Westmoreland won 6-1, 6-1 at the No. 3 position to make it 2-0.

"It's always a team effort, but if I thought one guy stood out today, it was Matt Westmoreland," said Moore. "He really is making a statement at the beginning with his footwork and commitment to play his style."

Less than two minutes later, Javier Pujol clinched his match by a 6-0, 6-0 final at the No. 5 position to make it 3-0. Peter Nagy closed things out shortly after, winning 6-1, 6-2 at No. 1 singles to give the Islanders the championship and the No. 1 seed heading into next week at the Southland Conference Tournament.

Ricardo Mayagoitia won 6-4, 6-3 at No. 4 to make it 5-0, and Gergo Weidinger closed it out with his 6-2, 6-4 final at No. 2 singles.

Next up for the Islanders will be the final regular season match of the season at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center. It will be Senior Day for Andrew Maingot and Gergo Weidinger, with the two seniors being recognized for their contributions to the Islanders Tennis program over their careers.
