Big Tennis Weekend On Tap For Islanders

The Texas A&M – Corpus Christi Tennis teams have a big weekend in front of them starting Friday, with the men facing Louisiana – Lafayette at 3 p.m. on Friday, and the women taking on McNeese State at 11 a.m. this Saturday and closing out the weekend at 1 p.m. on Sunday against Lamar.

The Islanders will have match sponsors on Friday and Sunday, with attorney David Harris sponsoring the ULL match, and Corpus Christi CrossFit sponsoring the Sunday match against Lamar.

The men's team (11-7), ranked No. 60 in the NCAA national rankings, will take on a team they have faced once before this season in Louisiana – Lafayette, with the Islanders taking a 4-2 final during the semifinals of the 47th Annual HEB Tournament of Champions. The match will be sponsored by attorney David Harris and will start at 3 p.m. on the courts at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center.

The women (12-2, 4-1 Southland) face a pair of crucial Southland Conference matches this weekend, with the team tied for first place in the loss column, with Southeastern Louisiana having the same amount of losses but also one more win after playing an extra match to date.

First up will be a tough test in McNeese State (11-7, 2-3 Southland) at 11 a.m. on the courts at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center. The Cowgirls have been a much-improved team this season under a new head coach, and come into the match having won two straight.

Saturday is also the National Student-Athlete Day Breakfast at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center, with the school providing free tacos to athletes who come out and cheer on the team.

Lamar (8-7, 4-1 Southland) is tied in the standings with the Islanders, and it will be an important match in deciding the Southland Conference Championship. Corpus Christi CrossFit will sponsor Sunday's 1 p.m. match.

Since the opening of the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center, the Islanders have had over 100 fans in 22-of-23 matches played, marking just one time in the history of the facility that the program has had under 100 people in attendance.
