Peter Nagy Named GoIslanders.com Student-Athlete of the Week
CORPUS CHRISTI – Peter Nagy has been named the GoIslanders.com Student-Athlete of the Week, presented by Pepsi. Nagy earned the award after leading the Islanders to the HEB Tournament of Champions title on Saturday.
Nagy had a banner week for the Men's Tennis team in perhaps their greatest regular season week in program history. Nagy led the Islanders Tennis team to its first ever tournament win in the 47th Annual HEB Tournament of Champions.
He started off the tourney with a win over No. 47 Patrick Kawka of BYU as the Islanders won 4-2 over the No. 30-ranked team in the nation. He picked up another win over Louisiana - Lafayette on Friday afternoon, helping his team to a 4-2 win over ULL and into the tournament finals.
On Saturday, the Islanders faced No. 34 Middle Tennessee and earned a tough 4-3 win over the Blue Raiders. In the process, Nagy beat No. 92-ranked singles player Ben Davis to even the match at 3-3 before Javier Pujol clinched it for the Islanders.
Nagy and the men's tennis team will next be in action on Friday, March 8, for a non-conference match against Florida A&M. The two teams are set for a 1 p.m. match to be played on the courts at the Thompson Family Tennis Center on the campus of Lamar.
