On Tuesday night the Texas A&M – Corpus Christi Tennis teams will crown two champions of an Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) tournament in the men's and women's finals of the Marco & Co. Catering Islanders Open. Both matches are scheduled for a 7 p.m. start under the lights at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center.
Junior Matt Westmoreland will play in the finals for the second straight year, this time taking on sophomore Peter Nagy in the last match of the tournament. Westmoreland will be looking for his first title after falling against Aurelien Tave in the finals of the 2011 tournament, while Nagy had not yet made it to Corpus Christi at this time last year and did not take part in the event.
Westmoreland won 6-2, 6-2 against Tyler Brown of UTSA while Nagy picked up a straight sets victory without losing a game, earning a 6-0, 6-0 final over Ricardo Hopker of Texas – Pan American.
Stefania Nicolae is the defending champion of the Islanders Open, while her opponent, Maider Martin, is another newcomer to the tournament.
Nicolae rallied from a set down to win her semifinal, taking a 0-6, 6-4, 10-8 final over Maja Kazimieruk from the University of Houston. Martin earned a win over teammate Sandra Burges, winning 6-3, 6-3 to complete the finals matchup.
