CORPUS CHRISTI – The Texas A&M – Corpus Christi Women's Tennis team clinched an All-Islanders final in the singles draw of the Marco & Co. Catering Islanders Open at the Corpus Christi Athletic Club. The tournament was moved indoors because of rain early in the day at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center.
The opening matches of the day started at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center, but competition was moved to the CC Athletic Club because of rain showers in the area. It was a reversal of fortunes for defending champion Stefania Nicolae when the venues changed.
Nicolae lost the first set of her match 0-6 at the first set of courts, but rallied to take a 0-6, 6-4, 10-8 final once play moved inside. She will face teammate Maider Martin after she won a 6-3, 6-3 final over another Islander, Sandra Burges, in the other semifinal match.
With the women's bracket turning into an All-Islanders final as well, Nicolae and Martin will also play at 7 p.m. on Tuesday night at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center.
In women's doubles action, Burges and Chelsea Horan lost an 8-2 final against Natalia Mayagoitia and Carolina Maso of Lamar in the doubles final.
Fans are invited to come out and watch a special event on Tuesday night as the Islanders will claim two titles in the officially sanctioned Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) event at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center. Match time is set for 7 p.m. on both the men's and women's side, and admission is free to the public.
