Islanders Tennis Camps Make Most of New Facilities

The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi tennis program is finally able to host camps for area youth this summer due to the sparkling new Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center on the Momentum Campus. Thanks to the efforts of University officials and local attorney Thomas J. Henry, the new courts will have a positive effect on the men's and women's programs and should help them continue to improve each year.

The new $2.4 million facility gives the Islanders coaches 12 courts to work with the camp attendees to better their tennis skills throughout the summer. Through the first two weeks, the camps have averaged about 35 participants per day with many more sessions to come throughout the next two months.

"I feel like the facility is just an incredible positive," said Director of Tennis Steve Moore. "Everyone just seems to have a little more bounce in their step playing in this beautiful new facility.

"I feel like our coaching staff is working extremely hard and doing a great job with the kids."

The camper limit per session is 48 people due to capacity on the courts and reached a high of 44 attendees during the first week of camp.

The facility will also be the new home to the Islanders tennis program and is one of the top home courts in the Southland Conference. It will give the teams a place to practice close to the main campus while helping attract elite talent to the Island.

Since Moore returned to the University, his tennis teams have had five different homes across the city, which made scheduling matches and practice times difficult. Despite the challenges, the men's tennis team has won four-straight Southland Conference titles and the women's team has improved every year with the best finish in program history coming last season.

"From the teams to the camps, I want everything we do that represents this university to aim to be top notch," said Moore. "I cannot reiterate enough how grateful we are for this new facility and what an incredible benefit it is to the university, tennis teams, students and the Corpus Christi tennis community as a whole."

Camps will continue throughout the summer with new sessions starting every week at the Henry Tennis Center. Kids age 10 and up are eligible for the camps and can fill out the attached sign-up sheet and return it to the address listed or bring it with them at the start of camp each Monday.
