Texas A&M – Corpus Christi senior men's tennis player Aurelien Tave was named the Southland Conference Player of the Week honor it was announced on Monday. Tave earned the honor after helping the Islanders go 2-0 during the past week, including clinching the match against Lamar and No. 1 overall seed in the upcoming tournament.
The senior from St. Gilles les Bain, Reunion Island finished his season undefeated in Southland Conference play with wins over Nicholls and Lamar at No. 1 singles, and was 3-2 on the year in doubles play alongside Peter Nagy.
In the first match of the week, Tave beat Damjan Despotovski by a 1-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7-3) to help the Islanders to at least a share of the Southland Conference title with a 7-0 victory against Nicholls. The very next day, he would clinch the outright title and No.1 seed in the Southland Conference Tournament with his 6-4, 6-1 win over Rob Lee of Lamar at No. 1 singles.
He also went undefeated in doubles during the week, with him and Nagy winning 8-3 over Nicholls at No. 1, and 8-6 against Lamar in the matches.
The Islanders will begin play in the tournament this coming Friday against UTSA in the first round. Should they earn a win over the Roadrunners, the men's team would then advance to the championship match at 10 a.m. on Saturday.
