Men’s Tennis Bounces Back With 7-0 Victory Over Prairie View A&M
CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The nationally-ranked Texas A&M – Corpus Christi men's tennis team got back into the win column on Sunday afternoon, taking a 7-0 match over the Prairie View A&M Panthers at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center.
The Islanders moved to 5-6 on the season with the win, while PVAM fell to 0-7 on the year with the defeat. It was the first home match for the team at the new Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center, and they opened the facility in perfect fashion, taking every match for a 7-0 victory.
"The guys showed good guts and character rebounding after that tough road trip," said Director of Tennis Steve Moore. "We're getting healthier and we're getting better.
"We came out today with a sense of urgency to get this team back on the right track, and I felt like the guys really did that. I felt like they took ownership of the team and the direction it was headed."
In doubles action, newly teamed Peter Nagy and Aurelien Tave grabbed a quick 8-2 victory at No. 1, while Nathan Robinson and Fernando Llorens also closed out their No. 3 doubles match with an 8-2 final to clinch the point. Gergo Weidinger and Alex Pavlov helped the Islanders to a sweep of doubles by taking an 8-5 final to finish that portion of the match.
In singles, Tave was the first to finish, picking up a 6-0, 6-0 win at the No. 2 position for a 2-0 lead. Nagy and Andrew Maingot clinched the match for their team with 6-1, 6-1 finals. Nagy took No. 1 singles with his score, while Maingot closed out the No. 6 spot.
Llorens picked up a 6-3, 6-0 win at No. 4 singles, while Pietro Jordan finished up a 6-3, 6-2 match at the No. 5 position. Weidinger went the distance at No. 3 singles before taking a 6-4, 5-7, 10-8 final to complete the match.
Next up for the Islanders will be the prestigious HEB Tournament of Champions starting on March 2nd at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center and HEB Tennis Center. The tournament will feature several prominent teams, with Oklahoma State, BYU, DePaul, New Mexico, South Alabama, Middle Tennessee and Western Michigan competing in the event.
"This is one match," said Moore. "We have to show up and do this every match without exception; every guy, every match.
"We have to do a good job at the things we can control, which is our energy, our effort and our attitude. Those are the keys for this men's team."
