Texas A&M – Corpus Christi men's tennis player Fernando Llorens was named the Southland Conference Men's Tennis Player of the Week on Tuesday after his 3-1 performance the week before in New Mexico.
"We're very proud of Fernando, he showed a lot of courage and poise to come out and start 3-0 as a freshman against ranked teams," said Director of Tennis Steve Moore. "I felt like the key was the hard work he put in over the Christmas break and his sense of mission after some tough results in the fall.
"He's playing very confident right now because he put in a lot of hard work, it's not common that you see that from a freshman in his first three matches, so we're very proud of him."
The freshman from Barcelona, Spain opened his collegiate career by going undefeated in the first three matches of the year. Against No. 53 New Mexico State, the freshman garnered a 6-1, 6-4 victory at the No. 6 position.
On Saturday, Llorens moved up to the No. 5 spot and claimed another straight-sets victory, this time winning 6-1, 6-2 over a player from Utah State. He rounded out the weekend by taking a 6-3, 6-1 final over Nevada's No. 5 singles player.
In the Monday night match against No. 56 New Mexico, Llorens suffered his first loss of the year after moving up once again, this time to the No. 4 position.
For the week, Llorens helped the Islanders to a 2-2 record, including a win over No. 53 New Mexico State.
"The other thing that may not be mentioned in the stat sheet is the positive spirit he competed with and the constant pumping up of his teammates, which are really keys to a team's success," said Moore. "It's a great overall message when you see a kid's hard work and great attitude pay off."
Llorens will be in action with the Islanders at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday night against No. 52 TCU in Fort Worth. It will be the fifth-straight road match to start the season for the team before returning home to host No. 19 Texas on Feb. 12 at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center.
