Tennis Programs Host Successful Islanders-Amateur Tournament Fundraiser
CORPUS CHRISTI – The Texas A&M – Corpus Christi men's and women's tennis programs raised over $6,000 this weekend through the Mercedes-Benz Dealers Championships Islanders-Am on Saturday. Sixteen doubles teams on both the men's and women's sides competed for the title of the tournament, which was supported through the generous support of Ed Hicks Imports.
"I want to thank all of our participants for making this a tremendously successful event," Director of Tennis Steve Moore said. "Everybody had a wonderful time, and thanks to the generous support of Ed and Charlie Hicks, our two winners received a wonderful prize.
"I hope this is the first year of what will be a tremendously successful annual event for years to come."
The winners – Kevin Liles and Texas Tennis Association officer Katy Rogers – each won an all-expense paid trip for two to Pinehurst, N.C., where they will spend four nights at the Pinehurst Resort and Spa. The winners will then compete in a point-based competition at the event with the chance to win a three-day/two-night VIP trip to the 2012 US Open in Flushing Meadows, N.Y.
The tournament was set up in a single-elimination doubles format, with the competing players being paired up with a player from the Islanders Tennis program. However, Islanders would rotate to a different advancing team following every win, ensuring that no participant was able to succeed solely on the ability of their partner.
"The setup was unique in that nobody from our program was matched up with a particular player more than once," Moore said. "I think it also gave our players a chance to interact with some of the leaders of our community, which is great for our program. We're happy that our student-athletes got a chance to be ambassadors for our University and our athletic department."
