Several Players Shine on Rain-Shortened Day at Islanders Open
CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - Texas A&M – Corpus Christi's Sandra Burges and Stefania Nicolae on the women's side and Aurelien Tave and Matt Westmoreland were the top performers of a shortened day two at the Third-Annual Islanders Open at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center. The schedule was affected by rain and lightning throughout the day with play set to resume at 8:30 a.m. on Sunday morning.
Burges had a big day on the court, winning two matches while losing just two games over the matches to advance to the quarterfinals of the singles bracket. She downed April Downing of Tyler Junior College 6-1, 6-1 in the opening round before taking down teammate Cassandra Shaw 6-1, 6-1 in round two. Shaw advanced to the round by winning 6-2, 6-7, 12-10 against Jennifer Betancourt of Laredo Community College.
Nicolae also advanced to the quarterfinals with a pair of wins. She opened with a quick 6-0, 6-0 win over Melissa Brizuela of Laredo before taking a 6-3, 6-2 win over Alejandra Pennesi of Lamar in the second round.
Other action on the women's side saw Mia Matuszak fall 7-5, 6-0 against Pennesi before coming back with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Brizuela. She is set to face teammate Ashley Garza in the quarterfinals of the consolation bracket after falling 6-1, 6-1 against Jo Garvey of Houston and getting a bye in the consolation. The other Islanders women's player in action was LeAnne Mascall who lost in the first round and will face Alejandra Enderica of TJC in the consolation bracket.
On the men's side, Tave ran through the first two rounds with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Shariq Khan of UTSA and a 6-1, 6-2 win against Louis Vivas of TJC in round two. Tave will face Oliver Breininger of UTSA in the quarterfinals on Sunday.
Matt Westmoreland also advanced to the quarterfinals with a 6-1, 6-2 win over TJC's Adam Taylor and a 6-2, 6-1 triumph over Enrique Mattos of Laredo. He will take on Jeremie Castella of Laredo in his next match for the chance to advance to the semifinals.
Pietro Jordan won his first match 6-4, 6-7 (2-7), 10-1 against Ryan Kennedy of TJC before losing 6-3, 6-2 against Alfredo Desiati of Abilene Christian. Andrew Maingot also picked up a win, taking a 6-4, 6-2 final over Zach Sivalls of ACU before suffering a 6-3, 6-2 defeat against Jair Assuncao of LCC.
Fernando Llorens lost his first match 6-2, 6-3 against Jacob Rother of TJC before rallying to win 6-3, 6-0 against Felipe Jensen of Laredo. Nathan Robinson lost both of his matches on the day to complete play at the tournament.
The schedule will resume at 8:30 a.m. on Sunday with in-progress doubles matches to be resumed and completed.
