The Texas A&M – Corpus Christi Tennis programs will host the Third-Annual Islanders Open starting Friday evening in the first-ever event at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center. The men's and women's tennis programs will host individual from Houston, Lamar, UTSA, Abilene Christian and the top two junior colleges from the final rankings last year, Laredo Community College and Tyler Junior College, in a full singles and doubles draw.
"We're incredibly honored and excited to host this tournament for the first time ever at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center, our home tennis facility," said Director of Tennis Steve Moore. "It is very much a landmark event and with a facility like this, we plan on making it a great weekend.
"This is a very proud moment for the islanders with their first official event in this incredible facility."
Action will kick-off on Friday evening at 5 p.m. with two rounds of doubles. The draw will feature a 16-draw in doubles with eight first-round matches and a 32-draw with 16 matches in the opening round for both men's and women's competitors. There will be a consolation bracket for players who do not win their first-round match.
On Saturday and Sunday, play will begin at 9 a.m. each morning and run throughout the day. Admission to the tournament is free and all fans are welcomed to come out and cheer on their Islanders.
Texas A&M – Corpus Christi's fall season is their non-traditional season for individual play. Returning players and newcomers to the team will get a chance to get re-acclimated to playing against other collegiate players before the start of the team seasons in the spring.
