The Texas A&M – Corpus Christi men's and women's tennis teams will host the first-ever collegiate competition at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center starting on Friday when the Third-Annual Islanders Open begins play at 5 p.m. The tournament is an officially-sanctioned Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) event.
The Islanders will host men's and women's players from Houston, Lamar, UTSA, Abilene Christian and Tyler Junior College. The tourney will feature a full 32-player singles draw and a 16-team doubles draw for both the men and women. There will also be a consolation round for those who don't advance past the opening match so each player gets at least two matches.
Matches will run from 5 p.m. until the first round is completed on Friday night, and then start back up at 9 a.m. on Saturday morning. The finals of both singles and doubles for both sides will be played beginning at 9 a.m. on Sunday morning.
Updates will be available on the Islanders Tennis Twitter account (@IslandersTennis) and complete wrap-ups of the day will be available on www.GoIslanders.com.
In the video, Associate Head Men's Tennis Coach Goncalo Figueiredo talks about what the event means to the program, and what the coaches are looking to get out of the weekend on competition.
