Montoisy named Southland Player of the Week for fourth time this season

Texas A&M - Corpus Christi men's tennis player Laurent Montoisy keeps racking up honors this season after picking up his fourth Southland Conference Player of the Week honor on Tuesday. The native of Belgium was named the Player of the Week on February 1st and 22nd as well as on March 8th of this season.

"The thing that's so special about Laurent is that it's not just his performance on the court," said Director of Tennis Steve Moore. "He's been absolutely phenomenal in these big matches, but equally impressive is the incredible leader and team captain he has been.

"He just cares so much that you can't be anywhere around him without becoming incredibly passionate about the team."

The Islanders senior co-captain went 2-0 in singles and 1-1 in doubles during the week as he powered his team to an undefeated week and helped keep them in contention for a fourth-straight Southland Conference Regular Season Championship.

Against UT Arlington, Montoisy and Gergo Weidinger lost a hard-fought 8-7 (7-5) battle at No. 1 doubles before he rebounded with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Mindaugas Celedinas at the No. 1 singles position.

In the second match of the week, the senior was ever more dominate as he and Weidinger took an 8-5 final at No. 1 doubles before he powered through his No. 1 singles match by a 6-0, 6-1 final over Denis Ermilov of Lamar.

"It's special when you get a guy that talented and plays at that high of a level," said Moore. "But he also brings all those intangibles that you so deeply appreciate as a coach."

Although the match does not count towards this player of the week honor, Montoisy defeated the reigning two-time Southland Conference Player of the Year, Aswin Vijayaragavan, in straight sets to setup a championship match this Thursday.

"It's special when you get a guy that talented and plays at that high of a level," said Moore. "But he also brings all those intangibles that you so deeply appreciate as a coach."

Texas A&M - Corpus Christi will meet UTSA on the road in a battle of teams that are undefeated in Southland Conference matches. A win in the match would give the Islanders their fourth-straight regular-season title and the No. 1 seed in the upcoming Southland Conference Tournament.
