Islanders tennis sweep three matches on Thursday at Prairie View A&M

HOUSTON, Texas - The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi men's and women's tennis teams won all of their matches on Thursday, with the men's team taking two from Prairie View A&M and the women's team winning its only one of the day against the Panthers.

The No. 62 men improve to 5-4 on the year and have won four-straight matches while the women's team improved to 3-1 after winning their third in-a-row.

"I wanted both teams today to really be extremely mentally tough in the wind," said Director of Tennis Steve Moore. "I felt both teams were just that today.

"We're going to see a lot of these conditions this spring, so we have to continue to focus on staying in the present and being extremely mentally tough."

The men's team started out the day with a 9 a.m. match against the Panthers in Houston, taking a 6-0 final by going undefeated in singles matches. The two teams did not play doubles in the dual match.

In No. 1 singles, Robert Raguz beat his opponent, Kudakwashe Nyatoti, by a 6-1, 6-2 score. The No. 2 position saw Aurelien Tave down Ronald Chidzikwe 6-0, 6-1 to take the match. Gergo Weidinger won his No. 3 singles match by a 6-3, 6-4 final over Kristen Powell and Matt Westmoreland took the No. 4 singles point by a 6-4, 6-1 score over Craig Wiltz. Alex Pavlov won 6-1, 6-2 over David Aldaz at No. 5 singles and Nathan Robinson completed the sweep by taking a 6-0, 6-1 decision over Jamaal James at the No. 6 position.

In match two of the day, Texas A&M - Corpus Christi won by a 5-0 final over PVAM after winning the doubles point and completing four of the singles matches.

At No. 1 doubles, Robinson and Raguz won 8-5 over Karim Fotso and Powell. No. 3 doubles had Tave and Weidinger winning 8-1 over Aldaz and James to clinch the point for the Islanders. Westmoreland and Pavlov were tied at 5-5 with Nyatoti and Chidzikwe when play was stopped to begin singles action.

"Our doubles is improving, but needs to keep doing so," said Moore. "We're looking at a lot of combinations trying to find the right answer because that is a place we need to get better."

In singles, Raguz downed Fotso 6-3, 6-2 at No. 1, Tave beat Nyatoti 6-1, 6-2 at No. 2 and Weidinger won his No. 3 singles match 6-3, 6-1 over Chidzikwe to clinch the match.

The No. 5 singles match between Pavlov and Aldaz was tied at 2-2 in the first set when play was stopped while Robinson never began play against James in the second dual match.

"Good mental toughness today from the guys playing a doubleheader," said Moore. "It was a very good chance for some deserving guys to get some experience.

"I thought that Robert rose up very well and played very well at No. 1 two matches in-a-row, his game has greatly improved and it showed today."

On the women's side, Texas A&M - Corpus Christi played the Panthers in a single 3 p.m. match.

The Islanders swept the doubles matches to gain a 1-0 lead early on. At the No. 1 spot, Mirna Cicak and Stefania Nicolae won 8-0 over Lerato Ndlovu. In No. 2 doubles, Doris Kuselj and Bianca Discordia won 8-1 over Raven Lewis and Alix Thomas while Mia Matuszak and Nadia Filmalter won 8-2 against Alejandra Barrera and Lise Karenzi at the No. 3 position.

"I thought the girls were very focused today and did a very good job of the things they could control, especially dealing with the wind," said Moore. "I thought they made very good adjustments.

"We need to play that level of doubles again this Sunday against a tough Nicholls team."

In singles, Cicak had a tough battle on her hands, winning in three sets by a 6-2, 4-6, 10-5 final at the No. 1 spot against Ndlovu. Discordia played No. 2 singles due to Kuselj being held out of singles play, winning 6-2, 6-3 over Brittany Harrell. Nicolae beat Lewis 6-3, 6-3 at No. 3 to clinch the match while Sandra Burges took a 6-1, 6-0 final against Barrera at the No. 4 position. Matuszak and Filmalter did not play their scheduled singles matches due to the team clinching the win.

"I was especially proud of Mirna as she faced a tough opponent and found a way to win," said Moore. "It was a very good overall job by the girls today.

"I'm very excited about this women's team and the potential they have this year. We have good depth, good character and are working very hard together right now."

Next up for both teams is a Sunday afternoon match against the Nicholls Colonels in Beaumont. It will be the second Southland Conference match of the season for the women while the mean will make their 2011 debut in conference play. The women are coming off of their highest finish in the league standings in school history while the men have lost just one Southland match in the past four seasons.

The women's team beat Nicholls by a very close 4-3 final last year and are looking to have success against the Colonels again this season. The teams agreed to meet on the Lamar campus in Beaumont.

"Sunday needs to be a very focused effort," said Moore. "We have the same goal every match, play every point with intensity and give away nothing."

Start time is set for 11 a.m. in Beaumont for the pair of Southland Conference matchups.
