No. 62 Islanders down Louisiana-Lafayette by 5-2 final in home opener

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi men's tennis team fell behind early but fought back to take a 5-2 final over visiting Louisiana-Lafayette. It was the2011 home opener for the team at the Corpus Christi Country Club.

"I think the crowd today was awesome and they're always a big advantage for us when we play at the Corpus Christi Country Club," said Director of Tennis Steve Moore. "I would say without a doubt there's a special bond between the team and the folks at this club, and they've pulled us through more than a couple of matches where we were losing and needed a shot in the arm.

"That's one of the great things about playing in such a great tennis city.

The crowd played a big part in getting the Islanders back into the match after they fell by a 2-1 final in the doubles round to make it 1-0 in favor of ULL early on. The Islanders were not phased however as they came into the match expecting a tough challenge from a team that always plays them competitively.

"A very, very hard-fought battle today, we've developed a great rivalry with this team over the years," said Moore. "We have a lot of respect for this team and this coach.

"Give them credit, in the doubles point they just rose up and took two matches that we were up in. We talk a lot about being resilient and these guys definitely were today, I thought they fought with incredible spirit after the doubles."

The home team came roaring back in singles action, as Matt Westmoreland quickly put his team into a tie at 1-1 in the dual match with his 6-4, 6-1 victory over Elliot Minvielle at the No. 6 position.

"I think these guys have really bonded together and their hard work has resulted in a lot of improvement," said Moore. "Matt Westmoreland's match today is a microcosm of that, he beat a guy today in straight sets that he lost to in the fall in straight sets.

"That's what we want, to take care of the things we can control and work hard on the right things."

Aurelien Tave gave his team the lead by coming back all the way from 5-1 down in the second set to take a 6-1, 7-5 final over Brandon Farine in No. 4 singles to make it 2-1. Laurent Montoisy put Texas A&M - Corpus Christi on the brink of victory with his 6-2, 6-3 win over Carlin Murray at the No. 1 position.

James Langford completed the comeback from the deficit by winning a 6-3, 6-4 final against Yanick Mandl in No. 2 singles. Robert Raguz won his match in an incredibly close 7-6 (8-6), 4-6, 10-6 final against Ted Nilsson in the No. 3 singles spot. Gergo Weidinger came up short in his attempt to help the Islanders sweep the singles matches, falling 6-4, 4-6, 3-6 at No. 5 against Carl Alberton.

"Our last four matches have been remarkably close, with all four coming down to a tiebreaker in the last match," said Moore. "So we knew we were going to have to play every point today with intensity."

In doubles, Montoisy and Weidinger won at the No. 1 position in a very tough match against Nilsson and Robert Voss, taking an 8-7 final. In No. 2 singles, Raguz and Nathan Robinson lost a heartbreaker to Mandl and Farine by a 9-8 (7-5) mark. No. 3 singles had Langford and Alex Pavlov dropping an 8-6 match to Murray and Alberton to finish the match.

Next up for Texas A&M - Corpus Christi will be a Sunday, Feb. 20th match against Nicholls in Beaumont. Both the men and women will compete against the Colonels that day in Southland Conference play.
