Islander men's tennis duo advance to finals of Rice Invite
HOUSTON - The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi men's tennis team had a stellar showing from its top men's tennis doubles team on Saturday to advance to the finals of the Holiday Inn Hotel and Suites Medical Center Rice Fall Invite.
Laurent Montoisy and James Langford won a 9-7 match over Julien Gauthier and James Turbervill of LSU to advance to the finals of the doubles B Draw. The pair will play Ben Chen and Sudanwa Sitaram of Texas on Sunday at a 9:00 a.m.
"Laurent and James competed very well today," said Director of Tennis Steve Moore. "They are really starting to understand how to be an elite doubles team and the things they need to do to beat these top teams.
"Tomorrow will be a very tough test for them. You don't get the opportunity to win an ITA fall tournament very often, so we need to be focused and ready to play our best tomorrow."
In singles action, Montoisy won his match 7-5, 6-2 against Sam Garforth-Bles of Rice to advance to the consolation bracket finals of the singles B Draw against David Holiner of Texas. The match is scheduled for 10:00 a.m. on Sunday morning.
Langford was not as fortunate, losing his singles C Draw match by a 6-1, 6-2 final against Texas' Turbervill. Langford will play Nicolas Moreno of UT Arlington in a 10:00 a.m. match on Sunday.
After the Islanders duo finishes up play in the Rice Invite, the team will participate in the ITA Fall Regionals on the campus of Texas A&M. The tournament will be held on Oct. 22-25 in College Station.
