Tennis teams set to compete this weekend against top competition

The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi men's and women's tennis teams will once again be facing some of the top competition from around the region when they play in separate tournaments this weekend.

The men's team will travel to Waco as the players take part in the Baylor HEB Invitational. Players from Texas A&M, Auburn, Baylor Idaho, Maryland, New Mexico State, Oklahoma State, Purdue, Rice, TCU, Texas Tech, Louisiana-Lafayette, Air Force, UT Arlington and Texas-Pan American will also be taking part in the tournament.

Representing the Islanders will be James Langford, Laurent Montoisy, Alex Pavlov, Robert Raguz, Nathan Robinson, Aurelien Tave and Matt Westmoreland.

Islanders Open champion Langford will see his first action since winning the title when he faces Ted Nilsson from ULL while his doubles partner for the tournament, Montoisy, will face Jesse Kiuru from Maryland. Tave will see action against Alex Stamchev of Auburn to round out the singles contingent.

In doubles, the Islanders team of Langford and Montoisy will play Alberto Bautista and Colin Hoover of Texas A&M and the team of Tave and Westmoreland will face Danny Gies and Ali Rizvi of Air Force.

On the women's side, the team travels to the Louisiana-Lafayette Fall Invite. In addition to the Islanders, teams from Louisiana-Lafayette, Middle Tennessee, South Alabama, McNeese State, Southern Mississippi and Texas State will have players in action.

Islanders Mirna Cicak, Sandra Bruges, Ashley Garza, LeAnne Mascall, Stefania Nicolae, Mia Matuszak Bianca Discordia and Nadia Filmalter will see action in the tournament. Cicak and Filmalter have byes into the second round, while the rest of the players will see action in the first round.

Discordia will play Moorea Williams of Southern Miss, Bruges will face Elja van Berlo of Southern Miss and Garza will see action against Jessica Laing of Texas State. Mascall faces another USM player in Vroni van Berlo, Nicolae will play Taylor Coffey of Middle Tennessee and Matszak closes out the first-round action against Sandra Ahlqvist of ULL.

In doubles, the Islanders will face a pair of teams from Southern Miss as Filmalter and Garza will face Asa Bengston and Elja van Berlo, while Bruges and Discordia plays Alex Bradley and Kellie Gutterman. The teams of Cicak and Nicolae as well as Mascall and Matszak receive byes into the second round.
