CORPUS CHRISTI - The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi men's tennis team crowned a champion of the 2010 Islanders Open after James Langford beat teammate Laurent Montoisy. The tournament is an officially sanctioned Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) fall tournament.
"Overall, it's great for these kids that we host an ITA event at home," said Director of Tennis Steve Moore. "It's great for our community and I think tonight kind of showed that."
Langford won the first set before dropping the second to Montoisy to send the match to a tiebreaker third set. Langford won the extended tiebreaker to take a 6-2, 1-6, 11-9 final for the tournament title.
"It's funny, these two guys have played each other a lot so it becomes a chess match," said Moore. "They know each other so well.
"Give credit to James, he really rose up tonight. I think Laurent played well too, but I also think he learned a lot tonight."
The final of the tournament, held two days after originally scheduled, was played at the Corpus Christi Athletic Club. The club went above and beyond during the weekend to help make the completion of the tournament possible. It played host to a crowd of roughly 100 people to watch the Islanders teammates compete against one another.
"I really thank the Corpus Christi Athletic Club and Billy Morehouse for all they did and putting on this event tonight." said Moore. "I was really pleased with the turnout and support."
Moore was pleased to see two of his top players compete so hard against one another out on the court. The pair will be looked to for a lot, both on and off the court, this season.
"These guys have both improved and matured a lot," said Moore. "They haven't just improved, they are also our leaders and team captains."
The men's team will compete at the Baylor HEB Invite while the women's team heads to Louisiana to participate in the Louisiana-Lafayette Fall Invite this weekend.
