Islanders dominate long second day of Islanders Open
CORPUS CHRISTI - The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi tennis teams enjoyed success on day two of the 2010 Islanders Open and are positioned to compete for both the men's and women's individual and doubles titles on Monday.
Despite rain forcing all matches indoors, the individual players pushed through it and played throughout Friday evening to get in as many matches as possible after starting late in the afternoon.
Sandra Burges won a 6-3, 6-3 match over Brittany Tobin to end the opening day. Mia Matuszak won a 1-6, 6-4, 10-6 final and men's player James Langford took a 6-4, 6-3 win to complete the other Islanders matches on the day.
On day two, Laurent Montoisy started it off by dominating Cody McCarty of Abilene Christian by a 6-0, 6-1 final. Duje Janjic lost to John Strahl of ACU for the right to face Montoisy in the third round. Montoisy took control of the match with Strahl as well, winning 6-1, 6-0 to move into the quarterfinals on Monday.
Aurelien Tave beat Wes Strahl from ACU by a 6-0, 6-2 score to move on to face fellow Islanders player Matt Westmoreland after Westmoreland beat Victor Alves of UTPA 6-1, 6-1 in the second round. Tave got past Westmoreland and into the quarters against Montoisy by taking a 6-3, 6-4 match.
In the bottom half of the bracket, the Islanders pair of Robert Raguz and Andrew Maingot played in the second round with Raguz taking a 6-1, 6-2 win. Alex Pavlov beat Jake Hendrie of ACU in a close match by a 7-6, 6-4 score.
Langford lost in the second round by a 7-5, 6-3 final against Alfredo Desiati of ACU. Raguz later faced the ACU player as well, taking a 6-3, 6-0 loss to Desiati. Raguz played teammate Nathan Robinson in the third round, taking a three-set win by a 5-7, 6-4, 10-8 final after dropping the opening set.
The final four in the men's bracket has Montoisy and Tave competing to meet the winner of Raguz and Desiati. The four will play until a champion is crowned on Monday afternoon.
On the women's side, defending champion Mirna Cicak won her only match of the day, a 6-2, 6-1 final over Wanda Beguelin of UTPA.
Stefania Nicolae won in dramatic fashion once again, taking a 3-6, 6-1, 10-5 final over Bryony Hunter of Houston after losing the opening set for the second-straight match. Nadia Filmalter won her first match 6-2, 6-4 over Alessandra Pennesi of Lamar before losing 6-2, 6-1 to Hunter.
LeAnn Mascall won both of her singles matches on the day, taking a 6-4, 6-2 final over Dana Nazarova of UTPA in round one and beating Alicia Porte of Lamar by a 6-7, 6-4, 11-9 score.
Burges lost her second round match to Joanna Kacprzyk from UH by a 6-0, 6-1 final. Freshman Ashley Garza lost her opening round match to Giorgia Pozzan of UH by a 6-0, 6-1 tally. Matuszak lost a 6-3, 6-3 match to top-seeded Kim Anciete of Rice to round out singles play on the first day.
In doubles matches, Cicak and Nicolae won 8-1 over Strkie and Raty from UTPA. Other Islanders pairs were not as fortunate as Matuszak and Mascall lost a 8-6 match to Pennesi and Mayagoitia for Lamar, Bianca Discordia and Burges lost 8-5 to Kacprzyk and Kazimieruk of UH and Filmalter and Garza lost 8-2 to Anciete and Shankar from Rice.
On the men's side, Montoisy and Raguz beat Robinson and Maingot 8-2 while Westmoreland and Tave took down McCarty and Strahl from ACU by an 8-6 final.
