MEN'S TENNIS BOUNCES BACK WITH 4-0 WIN OVER ST. LOUIS BILLIKENS
San Antonio - The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi men's tennis team bounced back from a rough weekend at the HEB Tournament of Champions with a more than convincing win against St. Louis University on Tuesday in a neutral site match.
The Islanders improve to 5-8 on the year while St. Louis is now 5-3 on the season.
Playing doubles first, TAMUCC easily won the point and taking an early 1-0 lead. The brand new team of Andrew Maingot and Duje Janjic made their mark early on, winning an 8-2 final as the first team off the court. Alex Pavlov and Nathan Robinson also won their match convincingly, taking an 8-4 win at the No. 2 doubles spot.
"We got off to such a good start in doubles with the first match to come off the court being Maingot and Janjic playing together for the first time," said Director of Tennis Steve Moore. 'I love the energy and focus that Andrew and Duje had together, if they bring that every match, they can be a very good team.
"They really gave us an early shot in the arm today with the way they played."
In singles play, the Islanders won three matches to clinch the win by a 4-0 final.
At No. 3 singles, Robert Raguz beat Chris Eriksson by a 6-2, 6-3 final, Janjic beat Drew Feder 6-1, 6-0 at the No. 5 position and Robinson won against Dave Welkener by a 6-3, 6-1 final. In all but one singles match, the Islanders won the first set to dominate their opponent.
"We really challenged ourselves to bounce back hard after the HEB and really compete just as hard as we possibly could today," said Moore. "I felt like every guy definitively did that and that this team really grew.
"The character of a team is defined by the way it bounces back and this team competed with a real special sense of purpose today."
The Islanders play a non-conference match tomorrow against Texas-Pan American tomorrow at Corpus Christi Country Club. Start time is set for 12 PM.
