ISLANDER MEN FALL TO MIDDLE TENNESSEE IN LATE MATCH AT HEB TOURNEY

The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi men's tennis team suffered its second setback of the day when they fell by a 4-2 final to Middle Tennessee in the afternoon match at the HEB Tennis Center. The Islanders will continue play in the HEB Tournament of Champions against either Louisiana-Lafayette or South Alabama at 9 AM on Saturday.

"I was very proud of the way these young guys competed today," said Director of Tennis Steve Moore. "We set some pretty high standards here the last two years making the finals but they competed incredibly hard.

"They are getting better with every match."

The Islanders now fall to 4-7 on the season after the pair of defeats on Friday. In the morning match, they fell to DePaul after having being at dual-match point twice but were unable to close it out.

The late matches started with singles and were stopped when a team clinched its fourth point. The Islanders started out by taking a 1-0 lead when Alex Pavlov won at No. 5 by a 6-4, 6-0 final. The match was evened when Dmitry Novikov lost a 7-6 (7-5), 6-4 match at the No. 1 position. Duje Janjic followed with a 7-5, 6-1 loss at the No. 4 spot but TAMUCC knotted the match at 2-2 when Nathan Robinson took the No. 6 singles match by a 0-6, 6-2, 6-1 final.

The Islanders would fall behind 3-2 when Robert Raguz lost 3-6, 6-2, 6-4 at No. 4 singles, leaving just the No. 2 singles match. Langford fought hard but would come up short by a 6-2, 0-6, 6-4 final.

"This is a very special event for our community, out university and our team so we always hope to shine at this event," said Moore. "Today things just didn't quite roll our way."

TAMUCC will conclude play in the HEB Tournament of Champions on Saturday morning while the championship match between No. 18 Texas Tech and No. 23 BYU will begin at 12 PM.
