The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi tennis program will be making a big addition to its resume this weekend as both the men's and women's programs will be hosting the Islander Open, the first ever Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) sanctioned fall tournament in Corpus Christi. The ITA is the NCAA governing body of college tennis.

"This is a very positive addition for the men's and women's programs to add an official ITA tournament for the fall," said Director of Tennis Steve Moore. "We have been bidding to get a fall tournament for a long time and a lot of people in this community worked hard to make this event happen."

The Islanders currently host the HEB Tournament of Champions team tournament in the spring, but this addition to the program will help the Islanders continue to grow as a program and attract student-athletes to the area as it is an officially sanctioned ITA event.

"This is a real benefit for the student-athletes on our tennis teams for several reasons," said Moore. "They get to play at home in front of what many people consider the best tennis community in the United States, our community gets to see them, they don't have to miss class and it is a form of revenue for the teams."

Both the men's and women's teams will have players participate in what is an individual tournament as opposed to the common dual matches the Islanders play in the spring. In addition to TAMUCC, players from Abilene Christian, Lamar and Texas-Pan American will be participating in the three day event.

"I especially want to thank the club pros and members of the Corpus Christi Country Club and the Corpus Christi Athletic Club," said Moore. "They put in countless hours to help this event take place."

Play for the women will begin at 9 AM over at the Corpus Christi Country Club while men's bracket play begins at 9 AM at Pharaoh's Country Club near the campus of TAMUCC. Play will run all day with the locations staying the same on both Saturday and Sunday. There will also be both some men's and women's matches held at the Corpus Christi Athletic Club beginning at 9 AM on Friday as well. All matches on the final day, Sunday, will be held at the Corpus Christi Country Club and will begin at 10 AM.
