ISLANDERS CLINCH SHARE OF SLC CHAMPIONSHIP

The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi men's tennis team clinched at least a share of the Southland Conference regular season title with a 5-0 victory over Lamar on Thursday afternoon. TAMUCC can win the outright title with a victory in either of their two remaining matches to end the season. Although it was a great accomplishment for the team, they are focused and looking forward to trying to complete consecutive undefeated seasons in SLC play.

"We're very motivated and focused on the next match," said Director of Tennis Steve Moore. "They have earned a reputation for being very mentally tough and I expect that from this group."

The Islanders were forced indoors due to the weather but nothing rained on their parade as they won a decisive 5-0 victory to move to 4-0 in SLC play.

They are now 10-8 overall on the year with the perfect 4-0 mark in conference. Lamar falls to 7-12 on the season and 0-5 in SLC play.

The Islanders dominated from the opening serve, winning all five singles matches that were played to completion. The first to finish was Laurent Montoisy, as he took a quick 6-4, 6-0 victory in No. 3 singles over Diego Snyder. Nearly simultaneously, Dmitry Novikov finished off Mario Janjic at No. 2 singles by a 6-1, 6-3 score to give the Islanders a 2-0 lead. No. 1 singles put TAMUCC on the brink, as Mikhail Pavlov downed Maciej Bogusz in three sets, winning 6-2, 2-6, 10-8.

The clinching match came when Jose Zunino was victorious over Marton Horvath in No. 4 singles by a 6-4, 6-1 final. David Pace was next to finish, winning No. 6 singles over Devin Harley by a 6-3, 6-3 tally. The final singles match at the No. 5 position went unfinished between Jaume Farras and Richard Filkuka.

There were no doubles matches due to the time constraints of the indoor venue. With the win, the Islanders win their second-straight SLC regular season championship and look to finish their final two matches with victories. If they do so, TAMUCC will have won 12-straight SLC matches and will have gone three seasons without having lost a match on the court.

TAMUCC finishes off the season with Southeastern La. and Nicholls, playing both in Beaumont this upcoming weekend. The Islanders will play Southeastern La. on Sunday, April 19 and finish the regular season off with Nicholls State on Monday, April 20.
