San Antonio - The #47 Texas A&M-Corpus Christi men's tennis team defeated the DePaul Blue Demons by a 4-2 final in a non-conference match on Wednesday.
The win moves the Islanders to 6-7 on the season and breaks a three match skid. The loss sent DePaul to 13-6 on the season.
"DePaul is a very good team, especially outdoors," said Director of Tennis Steve Moore. "This match was a real battle.
In No. 3 singles, Laurent Montoisy defeated Alasdair Graetz in straight sets by a score of 6-2, 6-2 to give the Islanders the early lead. James Langford added to the advantage for the Islanders when he downed Vanja Grgec by a final of 6-2, 6-3 in No. 6 singles to give TAMUCC an early 2-0 lead. Jose Moncada cut into the lead by beating Dmitry Novikov in No. 2 singles by a 6-2, 6-1 score.
The Islanders extended the lead back to two at 3-1 when Jose Zunino played Ben Hartman, winning 7-6 (7-2), 6-1. The final Blue Demons point came when Austin Doerner defeated Mikhail Pavlov in No. 1 singles by a 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) final. Jaume Farras clinched the match by finishing off Bartosz Jozwiak in No. 5 singles by a 7-5, 6-3 score. Doubles matches were not played due to weather conditions.
The win gets the Islanders back in the win column heading into the weekend. TAMUCC was previously scheduled to play UT Arlington this Friday, March 26 in Corpus Christi, but the match has been moved to Wednesday, April 1 at the Corpus Christi Country Club. The other regularly scheduled match this weekend against Louisiana-Lafayette will be played as scheduled at 2 PM at the Corpus Christi Country Club.
"I felt we were very focused, especially Laurent and James, who took care of business very quickly," said Moore. "I feel like we're improving every week and we need to with Lafayette on Sunday and in conference after."
