ISLANDER MEN SHINE AT ITA REGIONAL

College Statiton, Texas -- The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi men's tennis team had a good day at the ITA Regional being held on the campus of Texas A&M.

The tournament features every Divison I team in the state of Texas and some of the top players in the entire country. The Islanders took on and beat some of the top players in the field while earning wins over some very tough competition.

In doubles action, the team of James Langford and David Pace took down the #5 team in the entire tournament in the round of 32 as they faced off against Michael Breler and Sinisa Markovic of Texas Tech. Langford and Pace beat Breler and Marcovic by a score of 8-2 in taking down the team that advanced to the finals of this tournament last year.

Langford and Pace will take on Yanick Mandl and Neil Schneider of Lafayette in the round of 16 on Sunday at 4 p.m.

"This was a great win for Langford and Pace." said head coach Steve Moore. "They beat one of the best teams in the tournament, a team that was a finalist here last year."

The team of Jaume Farras and Alex Pavlov lost in the first round by a score of 8-2 to Kriegler Brink and Zach Nichols of TCU. Dmitry Novikov and Jose Zunino lost by a score of 9-8(7) to Marc Bruche and Dominik Mueller from Baylor.

In singles action, four of the Islander men won their first round matches on the day.

Zunino beat Julian Bley from Baylor by a score of 3-6; 6-4; 6-4. Zunino moved to the second round where he lost 6-3; 6-2 to the #2 seed in the tournament Bruno Rosa of Rice.

Novikov beat Adrian Simon of TCU by a score of 7-5; 6-3 in the first round. In the second round, Novikov will take on Austin Krajicek of Texas A&M on Sunday at 10:30 a.m.

Farras took on Devin Harley of Lamar in the first round, taking down Harley 6-1; 6-3. In the second round Farras fell to Marcovik of Texas Tech by a score of 6-1; 6-3.

Pace took on and beat Eric Olson of TCU by a score of 6-1; 6-2. In the second round, Pace fell by a score of 6-3; 6-2 to Dimitar Kutrovsky, the top seed in the entire tournament.

In other action, Pavlov fell to Brieuc Hamon of UT Arlington by a score of 6-2; 6-0 in the first round while Langford fell to David Gonzalez of Texas Tech by a score of 6-2; 6-2.

The Islanders are back in action on Sunday as they play several matches in day two of the tournament.
