The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi men's tennis team had several players competing in the UTSA Invitational and the Midland Racquet Club Invitational on Friday afternoon.
Jose Zunino reached the semifinals of the Midland Racquet Club Invitational by besting a player from St. Edwards in the opening round and getting past a member of the Texas A&M team. Zunino will play in the semifinal round on Saturday morning.
Dmitry Novikov also participated in the Midland tournament but was unable to make it out of the first round as he lost to Austin Krajicek in the opening round.
In the UTSA Invitational, several Islander players had good showings and will continue playing into the weekend.
"The guys played very hard and tough today." said coach Moore "I thought that overall, we competed very well today."
Jaume Farras was the big winner on the day, beating Bernie Lancaster from St. Edwards by a score of 6-2, 6-1 in the opening round of the A draw. Farras continued on, taking on and beating Robin Fernandez of host school UTSA in the quarterfinals by a score of 6-3, 4-6, 6-4.
Farras will take on Roman Petrunin from Tyler Junior College on Saturday morning at 8 a.m.
"I felt like Jaume really improved and showed a lot of guts today." said Islander head coach Steve Moore.
Freshman Alex Pavlov reached the semifinals of the B draw and will be competing at 9 a.m. Saturday morning. Pavlov reached the semifinals by beating a player from Tyler Junior College in the opening round and taking out Brett Powers of St. Edwards in the second round by a score of 6-4, 7-6.
Pavlov will take on Jorge Delgado of UTSA in the semifinals.
David Pace fell in the opening round of the B draw but will take on J.J. Haley of Tyler JC on Saturday morning.
James Langford won his opening round match against Nirvick Mohinta of Texas-Pan American by a score of 6-3, 6-1 but fell in the second round by a score of 6-2, 7-6 to Rodrigo Morgado of UTSA.
In doubles action, Pavlov and Pace opened the tournament by beating Mick Walter and Nick Arnold of St. Edwards by a score of 8-6. The pair moved on to the second round where they would beat Marcus Dornauf and Shashank Vij of UTPA by a score of 8-1 to move on to the semifinals of the doubles draw.
Pavlov and Pace will take on Nirvick Mohinta and Ashwin Vijayaragavan of UTPA in the semifinals at 10 a.m. Saturday morning
Langford and Farras took on Brett and Beau Bernstein of UTPA in the opening round, beating them by a score of 8-3. The Islanders pair would fall in the second round to Rodrigo Morgado and Pedro Zanotelli of UTSA by a score of 8-2.
