Pledger Leads Oklahoma Past Islanders, 72-42

NORMAN, Okla. – Steven Pledger matched a season high with five threes en route to 17 points to lead Oklahoma to a 72-42 win over the Texas A&M – Corpus Christi men's basketball team on Monday at McCasland Field House. The Islanders (1-10) got 14 points from Joy Williamson in his return to his home state.

OU (9-3) got 14 points from Amath M'Baye as well, and saw 11 different players snare at least two rebounds en route to a 44-35 advantage on the boards. The Islanders had six players grab at least four caroms as well in a losing effort. A&M – Corpus Christi committed 18 turnovers – the highest since the season opener – in the contest.

Early on, Oklahoma made the most of its size advantage and used a couple takeaways to jump out to an 11-2 lead at the 15:40 mark. The Sooners scored on each of their first four second-chance opportunities and started red-hot from the outside, opening 5-for-8 from beyond the arc to push the lead to 27-10 with 11:51 left in the half.

From there, the two teams battled back-and-forth, with Will Nelson and Williamson taking over for the Islanders offense. The duo scored 12 of the Islanders' first 18 points in the game as the Islanders trailed 32-18 at the 10:03 mark. But at that point, both teams saw their offenses stall, as the score remained that way for over five minutes. OU was able to close the half with eight of the final 11 combined points, putting the lead at 40-21 heading to the break.

Out of the locker room, the Islanders and Sooners traded baskets to get the score to 47-28 in favor of the home team. Oklahoma then embarked on a 10-0 run to push the advantage to a 57-28, with six of the points coming on threes for Pledger and the remaining four points from Romero Osby to open their biggest lead of the game.

A&M – Corpus Christi righted the ship when James King came off the bench to earn a pair of free throws, but the Sooners were able to counter every punch the visitors threw the rest of the way. Hameed Ali delivered a few late buckets, but Oklahoma's 15-for-16 performance at the free-throw line kept the lead in the vicinity of 30 points until the final buzzer

The Islanders return to the Lone Star State for a Friday afternoon matchup against conference foe Sam Houston State in Huntsville. The contest will be the first league doubleheader for the Islanders, with the women's game slated for a 1 p.m. start and the men's game to follow at approximately 3:30. The game will be carried live on NewsRadio 1360 KKTX.
