CORPUS CHRISTI – The Texas A&M – Corpus Christi basketball teams rang in the new season with the Islanders Basketball Tip-Off Dinner on Monday, Oct. 29, with ESPN and ABC basketball analyst Jimmy Dykes serving as the featured speaker. Stripes and the Susser Family put on the event as part of their continued support of Islanders Athletics.
"Stripes really put on a first-class event to tip off the new basketball seasons," Director of Athletics Scott Lazenby said. "The Susser Family has been one of the biggest supporters of our intercollegiate athletics program from day one, and events like Monday's make me so proud to have them as a partner in the continued growth of the city of Corpus Christi.
"I would also be remiss if I didn't thank all of our supporters who came out to Monday's event as well as Jimmy Dykes, who gave an outstanding talk," he added. "It was a great event to start what should be an exciting season for our men's and women's basketball programs."
The event, which was emceed by Steven King, featured speeches from head men's basketball coach Willis Wilson, head women's basketball coach Royce Chadwick and Dykes, with all three emphasizing the heights that Islanders Athletics can reach with the continued commitment of the community. There were also Q&A sessions with Johnathan Jordan and Nate Maxey from the men's team and Ashanti Plummer and Ashley Darley from the women's team. The event concluded with Sam L. Susser addressing the crowd.
The Islanders women's basketball team opens its season on Sunday, Nov. 4, with an exhibition against Texas Lutheran at 2 p.m. at the American Bank Center. The following day, Monday, Nov. 5, the Islanders men's team takes on Incarnate Word in an exhibition at 7 p.m. on Stripes Court. For tickets, call 825-BALL or visit GoIslanders.com.
