Top Moments #10 - Women's Basketball and Men's Basketball Sweep Turkey Tuesday Doubleheader
The Islanders Basketball programs had an outstanding night on Turkey Tuesday as both teams gave the fans a reason to cheer as they defeated their opponents at the American Bank Center on November 22, 2011. The women snapped a long losing streak with a win over Iona, while the men stunned perennial power Utah State that night.
The women's team was powered by three players in double digits propelling it to a 77-68 victory over Iona. The win snapped a 19-game losing streak dating back to the 2010-11 season.
Juniors Damequia Montgomery and Jessica Jammer paced the Islanders in double figures. Montgomery tallied her first double-double of the season with a season-high 19 points and 15 rebounds in 27 minutes of play. Jammer posted her first double-double of the year with 17 points and tied a career-best 10 boards. Senior Myeisha Myles recorded her third double-digit scoring game of the year with 10 points and pulled down eight boards in 24 minutes. The game featured 11 ties and eight lead changes.
As for the men's team, they followed that with a dramatic OT win over Utah State. A clutch Hameed Ali three-pointer in the extra session gave the team a lead it would not relinquish in a 58-55 win over Utah State. Myron Dempsey posted a double-double with 16 points and 15 rebounds in the victory.
The win was the first in Willis Wilson's tenure as head coach of the Islanders program. Terence Jones added 14 points for the Islanders, including a 5-for-6 effort from the line.
