Wang Named Second Team Southland All-Academic

CORPUS CHRISTI – Sophomore center Ted Wang of the Texas A&M – Corpus Christi men's basketball team has been named to the Southland Conference's All-Academic Second Team, the conference announced today. Wang, a business major with a 3.15 GPA, is the first Islanders player to earn academic all-conference distinction since Matt Slatnick was a second-team selection in 2007.

"We're very proud of Ted for his work in the classroom," Head Coach Willis Wilson said. "With all the distractions of the basketball season and all the demands of his major, it's a big accomplishment for him, particularly considering he's doing his work in his second language. He's an example of how we want our players to excel in the classroom."

Wang played in 24 games in his second year at the Island University, scoring 29 points and grabbing 31 rebounds on the year. The Zhe Jiang, China, native added 11 blocks in his 227 minutes of action. He has played in 30 games in his career at Texas A&M – Corpus Christi.

The sophomore's best stretch this season came during December. In the final six games of the calendar year, Wang scored 14 points and grabbed 23 boards. His best outing in his career was his performance against Bethune-Cookman on Dec. 22, when he scored six points to go with six rebounds.

The all-academic teams are voted on by the head coaches, sports information directors and academic advisors from each Southland Conference university. Student-athletes must possess a 3.0 cumulative GPA, have completed one full academic year at the nominating institution and participated in at least 50 percent of the team's competition to qualify for the all-academic squad.
