CORPUS CHRISTI – The Texas A&M – Corpus Christi men's and women's basketball programs hosted the 2011 Tip-Off Luncheon on Thursday at the Holiday Inn-Emerald Beach. Supporters of Islanders Athletics were on hand to hear head coaches Willis Wilson and Robert Robinson speak and to dine with the coaching staffs from both teams.
Coach Wilson talked to the crowd about how he saw those in the audience as a part of the Islanders Basketball program.
"I want to talk a little bit about the culture that we're building in our basketball program. You all are here because you're part of that culture. We want to build a team and build a program that's representative of you and this city in the best way we can."
For Robinson, the focus of the day's events was the new energy and attitude that his team has shown so far this preseason.
"I had no problem deciding how I was going to start this today, so let me begin by saying thank goodness last season is over. It was really rough for me last year – you all understand that. But that part of it is gone and I can't tell you how excited I am about this group this year."
The Islanders men will host Incarnate Word in an exhibition on Saturday, Nov. 5, at the American Bank Center before starting the regular season on Friday, Nov. 11, at Oklahoma State. The women tip off 2011-12 at the Dugan Wellness Center with a game against Missouri on Saturday, Nov. 12, at 7 p.m.
