Head Coach Willis Wilson and the Texas A&M - Corpus Christi men's basketball team have announced the signing of Jason Smith (Fort Worth, Texas/Allen CC) to a National Letter of Intent. Smith, a 6-foot-4, 190-pound forward/guard, helped lead Allen (Kansas) Community College to the Region VI Championships in 2011.
"Jason is an impressive scorer," Wilson said. "He was the number one option for his team at Allen, and even though he was the main focus of his opponents, he still averaged 25 points per game. He will add to our depth immediately, and has a chance to see significant playing time for us in the 2 and 3 spots."
Smith averaged 25 points, seven rebounds and five assists in his second season at Allen. He also shot 57 percent from the field and posted two steals per game. He had nine games with 29 points or more on the season, including a season-high 41 against Neosho on Dec. 1. His finest performance came in the first round of the Region VI tournament, as he led Allen to an upset of Cloud County Community College with a triple-double, posting 31 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists.
For his efforts, Smith brought in a bevy of honors, taking home First Team All-Region and First Team All-Region VI Tournament laurels. He was also given Second Team All-Jayhawk Conference honors.
Smith joins the five players who have already signed with the Islanders for next season. Myron Dempsey (St. Petersburg, Fla./Redlands Community College), Jordan Didier (Rockford, Ill./Saint Mary's (Ariz.) HS), John Jordan (Fresno, Texas/Hightower HS) and Nate Maxey (San Diego, Calif./Lincoln HS) signed NLIs in April, while Jake Kocher (Austin, Texas/St. Michael's) signed with the Islanders in November in the early signing period.
