Fans meet basketball teams at annual Islanders Invasion
CORPUS CHRISTI - Thursday night the Texas A&M - Corpus Christi men's and women's basketball programs were formally introduced during Islanders Invasion at the Dugan Wellness Center.
Fans were treated to performances by the Islanders cheer and dance teams in addition to the pep band. Each teams then entered the Dugan Wellness Center through a tunnel of members from the spirit squads.
Coach Rob Robinson and Perry Clark had their teams introduced to those who came out for the annual event.
Papa Johns sponsored a "minute to win it" contest in which the winner took home a free pizza. After the students got in on the action, the main event began with the Islanders teams.
Taking part in the main event of the invasion were Terence Jones and Antonio Topps from the men's team while Lauren Smith and Jade Davis represented the women's team.
Topps defeated Jones 10-7 in one semi-final with Smith defeating Davis by the close margin of 10-8 in the other. In the finals, Topps edged out Smith 11-9 to claim victory in the three-point contest.
Following the players contests, three fans that received free makeovers from Island's Edge Salon were introduced to the crowd.
The season opens up Nov. 6 with the men playing Texas A&M - International in an exhibition game at the Dugan Wellness Center. The women's team tips off their season Nov. 12 against Arkansas State in the Holiday Inn Emerald Beach Islanders Tip-Off Tournament.
