PALMER, WATT EARN ALL-SOUTHLAND CONFERENCE HONORS
Two members of the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi men's basketball team have been named to this year's All-Southland Conference teams released by the league office on Tuesday. The teams are selected by the head coaches and sports information directors.
For the second-straight season, senior guard Kevin Palmer has been named All-Southland Conference first team. The senior finished the season third in the league in scoring at 19.7 points a game. He was first in steals with 2.5, which was 14th in the nation after the regular season. He was tenth in foul shooting at 76.5%.He was third in the league with 15, 20-point games. He had a string of 43 consecutive double-digit performances broken during the season and became just the second two-year player to reach 1,000 points in a career.
Junior forward Demond Watt was a third-team selection marking his first time to receive post-season honors. He led the league in shooting hitting 65% of his shots and was just five made shots shy of qualifying as the national leader in field goal percentage. Watt was also sixth in rebounding at 7.8, and blocked shots (1.2). Watt hit 66.4% from the floor in league games.
UT Arlington guard Marquez Haynes was named the Southland Conference Player of the Year, while Sam Houston State's Gilberto Clavell was named the Newcomer of the Year. The Coach of the Year was Bearkat head coach Bob Marlin, while the Freshman of the Year was UTSA's Melvin Johnson III.
