The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi men's basketball team closes out the regular season at home Saturday as it hosts UT Arlington at the American Bank Center on Stripes Court at 7 p.m.
The Islanders (15-14, 9-6) enter the game needing a win to secure the third seed in next week's Southland Conference Tournament in Katy at the Merrell Center. Based on the finishes of other games the Islanders could finish as low as fifth. The Mavs (16-12) are 8-7 and have an outside shot at the third seed. With a loss, they could fall to as low as 8-8.
The Islanders rebounded from a disappointing performance last Saturday at Stephen F. Austin with a 24-point win at Lamar Wednesday night. Kevin Palmer led the Islanders with 28 points as Corpus Christi shot 54.4% from the floor, which is its second-best mark of the Southland campaign. Demond Watt added 11 points and Justin Reynolds 10.
UT Arlington is coming off a 73-64 loss to Nicholls at home. Marquez Haynes, the nation's third-leading scorer, had 25 points but it wasn't enough as the Colonels forced 22 turnovers.
In the last meeting between the sides, UT Arlington pulled out a 71-66 win in overtime. The contest was tight throughout with the neither team leading by more than five. Haynes had 20 points and Brandon Long 19 to lead the way. Palmer had 16 points for the Islanders, while Demond Watt had a double-double with 10 points. The biggest difference was foul shooting as the Islanders were 15-of-33 from the foul line.
The game will be the final home game for five seniors. Playing their final game at Stripes Court will be Shamar Coombs, LaMarr Drake, Marcus Hammonds, Filip Toncinic and Palmer.
