ISLANDERS BLOW PAST AGGIES
The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi men's basketball team wasted little time taking control of Monday afternoon's game with Oklahoma Panhandle State scoring the games' first 10 points and leading by as many as 37 points in the second half en route to a 97-67 win on Stripes Court.
The Islanders had four players score in double digits with 10 players scoring in all as they snapped a 4-game losing streak. TAMUCC moved to 5-6 on the year in its final game of 2009. The Aggies fall to 4-6.
Horace Bond opened the game with four-straight points in the paint. After a bucket by Justin Reynolds, Demond Watt hit four foul shots in a row for a 10-0 lead three minutes into the game.
Reggie Lassiter hit a pair of free throws for the Aggies for their first points. They did not get their first field goal until Stephen Colvin followed a Kevin Palmer three-point basket with a layin at the 14:42 mark.
The Islanders would extend their lead to as many as 29 points in the first half and led 51-29 at the intermission. Watt led the way for the Islanders with 12 of his 18 points in the first period including hitting all six free-throw attempts in the half. Justin Reynolds and Palmer added nine points in the first half. The Islanders posted a season-best for points in a period as they made 50-percent (19-of-38) of their attempts.
A&M-Corpus Christi continued to pour it on in the second half hitting 60.7% of its shots in the half with Demond Watt making it an 87-50 game with a dunk with seven minutes. OPSU would pulled no closer than 29 the rest of the way on a Cale Hoffman three-point basket.
Palmer and Watt led the Islanders with 18 points apiece. Filip Toncinic came off the bench to score 12 of his career-high tying 14 points in the second half, while Justin Reynolds added 11 points. LaMarr Drake came off the bench with a career-high nine assists as the Islanders had 20 for the first time this season.
A&M-Corpus Christi dominated the boards finishing with 41 while holding the visitors to 26. Watt missed his second double-double of the season with a team-high nine rebounds.
Lassiter led the hosts with 17 points, while Randy Daniel added 11.
The Islanders return to the road for their next four games beginning Saturday's contest against No. 2-ranked Texas. The game is slated for 3:30 p.m. and will be aired on Fox Sports Southwest in Texas on the Longhorn Television network. Fans, who get ESPN360.com will also be able to get the game over the internet.
