In the first full scrimmage in preparation for the upcoming 2009-10 season, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi senior Filip Toncinic hit a three-point basket with under two seconds remaining to lead the Blue team to a 73-71 win over the White Team.
"All-in-all for the first time out this fall, I was very pleased with how the team performed as a whole and it gives us a starting point," said Islander head coach Perry Clark. "I was pleased with our conditioning and with our competiveness. We showed a lot of balance on offense and that will provides us with some quality depth. I think we need to do a better job defensively and with our turnovers."
Senior Kevin Palmer had broken a 70-70 tie as he hit the second of two foul shots with 10 seconds remaining. Palmer finished with a game-high 33 points including 11-of-13 from the foul line.
The three-point basket was Toncinic's lone three of the game as he finished with 16 points. He was one of five members of the Blue in double figures. J.R Reynolds led the team with 18 points to go with a contest-high 16 rebounds. Horace Bond added a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Antonio Topps hit a game-high three treys, Terence Jones had 11 points and a Blue team best six assists.
On the White team, Demond Watt was the only other player in double digits finishing with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Shamar Coombs had a game-high seven assists.
The contest was tight throughout with the Blue team leading at the intermission by two, 27-25.
The Islanders will hold an exhibition game next Saturday on Halloween at the Dugan Wellness Center at 3 p.m. as Incarnate Word comes to town. The exhibition will be free to the public.
