The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi men's basketball team has recently finalized its schedule for the 2009 Islanders Skill Camp. There are two camps available at the end of June and will feature the Islander coaching staff and Islander players as camp coaches.
The two camp dates are June 22-26 for Session 1 and June 29-July 3 for Session 2. Both camps will run from 3-5 PM each day of the camp and cost is set at $100 per camp or a discounted rate of $175 if a camper decides to attend both camp sessions. The camps are open to all boys and girls from ages 6-18, limited only by the number of available openings. Camps will be held on-campus at TAMUCC at the Moody Fieldhouse.
The camps are designed to get the most out of each camper in the time they are with the camp staff. The camp is designed to help the campers get better while enjoying the experience and having fun learning proper techniques. The camp staff will demonstrate and instruct campers on specific drills each day. The campers will be graded on their progress and will be given a report card at the end of the week. Campers will also receive a workout plan to help continue to improve their skills in shooting, ball handling, rebounding, passing, defense and footwork.
Islander assistant coach Brian Merritt is the Camp Director and is assisted by Co-Director Kevin Norris, another Islander assistant coach. Merritt has had learned hands-on from current Islander head coach Perry Clark, current Louisville head coach Rick Pitino and Buzz Braman, well-known NBA assistant coach and shooting guru. Merritt has helped train several current and future NBA players and specializes in shooting skills.
Norris is a Baltimore, Md. native that is mentioned among the best point guards to ever come out of the city. He was the starting point guard at the University of Miami from 1994-98, matching up against Big East and NBA greats Allen Iverson and Ray Allen in his time with the Hurricanes. Norris has helped train numerous premier players in both the NBA and college game.
The Islander men's basketball program looks forward to helping all camp participants excel at their chosen position and bettering their overall basketball skills.
