The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi men's basketball team will be out to even its season record Sunday when it visits Tulsa in its second game in the South Padre Island Invitational. The game is slated to begin at 3 p.m.
The Islanders opened the season with a win over Texas A&M-Kingsville, but have since dropped back-to-back games to a pair of Big 10 foes Illinois and Northwestern. It marks just the fourth time in 10 seasons that the Islanders have begun a season 1-2.
Tulsa enters the game 1-1. The Golden Hurricane opened the season with a 7-point win over Oral Roberts, 50-43, before being walloped by future Texas A&M-Corpus Christi opponent Oklahoma State on Thursday, 91-73.
The meeting is the second between the two schools. The previous meeting was also in Tulsa on Nov. 26, 2005 with the Golden Hurricane winning by six, 73-67. It was the first win as head coach for Tulsa head coach Doug Wocjik. The Islanders have one win in seven meetings versus teams from Conference USA. The victory came at Texas-El Paso in February of 2003.
Junior college transfer Kevin Palmer continues to lead the Islanders posting double-digit points in all three games with 12.3 points a game. Justin Reynolds is second at 8.0 points a game and Filip Toncinic third (7.7). Demon Watt is leading the team in rebounding with 8.3 boards a game, and LaMarr Drake is dishing out just over four assists a game.
Ben Uzoh leads Tulsa with 20 points a game. He is shooting a stellar 59.3% from the floor. He is joined in double digits by Glenn Andrews who is netting 11 points a game. Jerome Jordan is third in scoring with eight points and leads the team with 6.5 rebounds. He has five blocks in two games.
