CORPUS CHRISTI – The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi Cheer and Dance Teams went above and beyond expectations this weekend at the Universal Cheer Association (UCA) and Universal Dance Association (UDA) camp, July 12-15, at Texas State University.
The dance team earned 47 blue superior ribbons in Division I while the cheer team garnered three first-place awards in Small Co-ed Division I. Izzy the Islander also represented the Island University with an exceptional weekend. Izzy garnered three superior blue ribbons and earned the Division I up and coming award.
"I'm very proud of all of them," Head Coach Melanie Lowry said. "This is the most talented team we've had in the history of spirit teams across the board, cheer, dance and Izzy."
For the second straight year, the Islanders Dance team earned the Most Collegiate Award along with a gold superior ribbon for fight song and the program fight song. The squad also earned a superior award for their individual performances and placed second in the home routine. Along with their 47 blue ribbons, the team garnered three excellent ribbons.
Last season, Islanders Dance Captain, Taryn Lovato, was hand selected by the judges for the second time in her career to try out for the UDA staff. She was the only Division I dancer to be selected, all the others were Division IA. This season, Lovato went beyond that and was offered a job with the UDA on the spot without having to apply or tryout.
Islanders Cheer also put together an outstanding four days of camp under the direction of head tumbling and stunt coach Kate Calderone and student assistant Josh Perez.
The squad earned three first-place ribbons for fight song, game-day camp champions and cheer in the Small Co-ed Division I. The squad also garnered a fourth-place finish in the sideline routine that they learned during the four days of camp.
Izzy the Islander earned superior first-place ribbons for crowd interaction and for the home skit along with clinching the Division I up and coming award.
"Kate and Josh did an amazing job helping the team to prepare the team for the camp," Lowry added.
