Updated Cheer tryout information now available

Tryouts are held April 29 & 30 and May 6 & 7. Registration for tryouts begins at 5pm on Friday and tryouts begin promptly at 6pm. You do not have to attend both tryouts. On day 1 of tryouts you will learn the fight song and a cheer and chant as well as show off your best pass on mats and hardwood floor. You will also be given the opportunity to work with a stunt group. A minimum requirement cut may take place on night 1 if needed. Those making it to day 2 will be asked to show off the skills learned on day 1 in front of a judging panel.

There is a registration fee of $25.00 in order to tryout. Attire for tryouts is black spankies, a sports bra or crop top (in Islander royal, navy blue, white, or black), hair up or down, and full make-up.

The cost for the cheer team is ranges from $200.00 to $300.00 per year and mandatory participation in fundraising events during the summer and fall months. The university provides all uniforms, poms, shoes, practice wear, and travel and meal costs so our team is extremely lucky when it comes to out of pocket expenses. We are also sponsored by Adidas so all our team gear comes from them.

As of now we do not compete but hope to in the future. Our cheer team is the face of the university and is therefore held to a high standard. They perform at all volleyball and basketball home games and community and university events. They also have the opportunity to travel with the Basketball teams in the Spring to tournament games.

The team ranges from 16-20 members and is a co-ed squad. All cheerleaders must be willing to do both all girls and partner stunts. Our team practices and works out 3-5 days a week depending on the time of year. Scholarships are available to those who qualify and are determined during the summer practices months. Scholarships are given based on talent, performance ability, and dedication.

Please note that our application has been updated as of 2/14/2011.
