CORPUS CHRISTI – Russell Vaughan has been named to the Capital One Academic All-District Team, it was announced Thursday. He was the lone catcher selected for District 7, which encompasses all of Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas and New Mexico.
The senior has been a standout in the classroom, as he has maintained a 4.0 GPA throughout his collegiate career while working toward a degree in health sciences. Prior to coming to the Island University, Vaughan earned the NJCAA Pinnacle Award during his time at South Mountain Junior College, which honors those who have posted a 4.0 GPA.
The Mesa, Ariz., native has also seen a huge improvement at the plate this season, as he is currently hitting .307 this year after hitting at a .181 clip in his junior campaign. Vaughan has already doubled his RBI total from a year ago, as he now sits at 19 on the year.
The senior has shown great discipline at the plate, especially in Southland Conference play, as he has coaxed the sixth most walks during league contests at 12, while tied for sixth in on-base percentage at .471.
Vaughan is one of four Southland student-athletes to garner this recognition, as Jason Stone (Incarnate Word) is the only one to join him in District 7, while Jameson Fisher (Southeastern Louisiana) and Andrew Guillotte (McNeese State) earned the honors in District 6.
All of the members of the district teams will now be voted on to make up the Capital One Academic All-America team, which will be released later this season.
